A Roman soldier pierced Jesus with a spear while He was on the cross to ensure that he was dead: “…one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.” John 19:34.
The prophet Zechariah foretold this more than 480 years before Jesus was born: “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.Zechariah 12:8-10.
We know when Zechariah was written because Zechariah 1:1 says, “In the eighth month of the second year of Darius…” Darius is well-known historical figure who ruled Persia from about 521 to 486 B.C.
There are many Old Testament prophecies that Jesus fulfilled, and this is one of them.
