BOOK EXCERPT-Jesus’ Crown of Thorns

“‘The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head.‘ John 19:2.   No one knows what plant the Romans used to make the crown of thorns. It might have been Ziziphusspina-christi, the Christ’s thorn jujube. This small and spiny evergreen tree commonly grew in the area, making it easy to find. The Bible verse says that the soldiers twisted together a crown, so it was composed of several flexible branches. If it was the Christ’s thorn jujube tree, then the thorns were about an inch long. Other candidate plants could have had spines of up to two inches long.

The human head has a tremendous number of arteries and veins. In ‘The Crucifixion, a Medical Perspective,’ a modern trauma surgeon examined the account of Jesus’s crown of thorns and noted that it would have caused excessive blood loss.[1] He has had patients die from excessive blood loss from a head wound. The long thorns digging deeply into Jesus’ scalp certainly would have added to the great blood loss that Jesus had from the scourging.”
